Shaun Stokes, Assistant Building Services Manager,
Westfield Shopping Towns,
Merry Hill Shopping Centre.
Re-roofing a building, approximately 44,000m2 in size, can present many different problems, but planning to re-roof a shopping centre that is still in use by staff and customers presented everyone at Everlast with a major challenge.
The massive Health and Safety implications of the project were expertly managed and overcome by our staff in the full office that Everlast established on site. Regular Health and Safety planning meetings were held with centre management, centre contract management, fire officers, planning supervisors and individual store representatives. Every one of the programmes, interfaces, method statements and safe working practices we proposed were fully discussed before the project commenced so that everyone could have complete confidence in a secure, efficient installation. Before any work had started we had set a very high standard for the entire project, so that all the work was completed with the quality that Everlast clients expect.
During the installation of the new roof, the Health and Safety plan was developed to meet the exacting standards of current Construction Design Management Regulations. It incorporated emergency planning, safe practice, COSHH information, interface details, waste disposal procedures, environmental management, equipment logs and work permits.
Design meetings were held regularly with the client and with all the manufacturers of specialist materials. Weekly progress meetings were also held to which site representatives from Everlast and the client were invited.
Throughout the project Everlast managed access to the roof level in partnership with the Shopping Centre Management Team. This helped to protect both the installation process as well as any individuals who were entering the building site environment.
As this was a refurbishment project the design of the new roof had to take account of the existing infrastructure of the building. By working closely with our industry partners and our client we were able to develop a re-roofing strategy that now provides Merry Hill Shopping Centre with the ideal solution to their roofing needs.
“Having worked with Everlast Waterproofing on numerous prestigious projects in the past, their on site management, and fully committed attitude to comply with current Health and Safety Legislation ensured that this very difficult contract has been contracted to the highest standards.”

Tremco Hi-Therm Pour and Roll system was a crucial aspect of the success of this project. This dynamic roofing system provides superior movement and elastomeric characteristics, even in colder climatic conditions as low as -25 degrees C.
BBA Certificated, the system is fully bonded and has exceptional adhesion qualities due to the bonding agent, Tremco Thermastic. This bonding agent is also BBA Certified and has a wide operating temperature for application as well as an outstanding resistance to wind uplift in all UK exposure conditions, proven in testing carried out by the BRE.
The Pour and Roll system has a life expectancy in excess of 20 years. It has extremely high puncture resistance and the bonding agent permits movement of felts and substrate without rupture. There are also numerous surface finishes available for clients to choose from.
During this project we made sure that mechanical and electrical containment was included in the design so that all systems at Merry Hill are suitably protected for years to come. We used a range of roofing accessories such as protective cable trays to ensure that the integrity of the roof was maintained at all times. The finished roof provides everyone at Merry Hill Shopping Centre with a tough, reliable, waterproof solution.
